Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix 2024

racecar on tracks

The fourth race in our F1 series on the 2024 races that impact BGA is the Grand Prix in Singapore, which will take place on Sunday night, September 22, 2024.

Airport Info:

Singapore's Seletar (WSSL) and Changi (WSSS) airports service the country. Seletar is the main airport for BGA flights, with a business aviation center and multiple FBOs/handlers. Changi is primarily for commercial flights, but BGA flights can land there (typically for quick turns only).

The following are the current restrictions that have been published. More details and specifics are expected to be provided in late August or early September (which we will post in an update as the situation warrants). Keep in mind, though, that other temporary restrictions might be implemented and communicated via NOTAM. For full country, airport, and NOTAM information, log into myWorld App or Online Flight Planning. Seletar Airport - WSSL

  • Operational Hours
    • WSSL AD 2.21 NOISE ABATEMENT PROCEDURES
      • To alleviate noise problems incurred by nearby residential areas, no flights are permitted between 1400-2300 UTC (2200-0700 LCL), other than MEDEVAC and emergency flights.
  • Designated Hours for Training Flights
    • To optimize the use of capacity, training and non-training flights will be segregated through designated hours. Non-training flights will not be permitted at Seletar Airport during the following periods daily except Monday:
      • 0130-0230 UTC / 0930-1030 LT
      • 0400-0500 UTC / 1200-1300 LT
      • 0700-0800 UTC / 1500-1600 LT
      • 0900-1000 UTC / 1700-1800 LT
  • CIQ is operational 24 hours.
  • Overnight parking is permitted but will most likely fill very fast.

While not in place yet for this year’s race, below are some restrictions that were in place in 2023 for the Grand Prix:

  • All parking requests had to be submitted by noon LCL 11 days before the race.
    • After the deadline, all parking requests or turnaround requests were considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to approval.
  • Parking control movement was arranged by CAG and the taxiways were closed, as needed, to create more parking spaces for aircraft.

Changi Airport - WSSS

Nothing has been published regarding WSSS yet. However, the following are what the airport authorities have historically done:

  • During the running of the Grand Prix, there was no imposition of curfews on the operations.
  • The airport and its CIQ facilities remain operational throughout the event.
  • A speed restriction on arriving flights may be imposed during the actual event.

While not in place yet for this year’s race, below are some restrictions that were in place in 2023 for the Grand Prix:

These guidelines were only applicable to F1 flights. Non-F1 related flights were denied operations to WSSS between September 10-20, 2023.

  • Only quick turnarounds (pick-ups and drop-offs) were allowed.
  • NO layovers were permitted between the 10th and 20th, except those requests supported with proper documentation for operational requirements to layover at WSSS.
  • For diplomatic flights, the permit approval number had to be included in the ICAO flight plan when it was filed.
  • MFA permit approval did not take bay availability into consideration.
  • All GCR filings were required to include the below in the SI:
    • Lead pax
    • Business entity
    • Reason(s) for operating to WSSS
  • Any submissions after noon local 11 days before the race (September 6, 2023), were not entertained.

Notes:

  • All operators that flew into Singapore during the period were advised to stick to their planned schedules to facilitate ground movement for passengers and/or crew, as well as parking control.
  • Priority was given to F1 sponsors, owners, player groups, and committee members.
  • F1 spectators were considered Non-F1 related personnel, so their flights were considered Non-F1 related flights.

Ground travel information:

  • Distances from the airports:
    • WSSS:
      • 18 km / 11.2 miles to downtown/Marina Bay Street Circuit - normally takes 20-30 minutes by car
    • WSSL:
      • 19 km / 11.8 miles to downtown/Marina Bay Street Circuit - normally takes 20-25 minutes by car
  • Ground transportation for both airports:
    • Shuttle buses, taxis, and limousines service all major downtown hotels from the airports.
    • All FBOs/Handlers can arrange crew transport.

Visitor Entry Info:

Hotels:

  • The venue for the Singapore Grand Prix is located around the Marina Bay Street Circuit. This is where you will find the best hotels. With over 40,000 international visitors gathering for this competition, it is wise to book early for the best choices, many with views of the track. Be sure to ask for a room with a balcony to save money on purchasing a race ticket. Swissotel The Stamford is located next to Turn 9. Pan Pacific has views to Turn 6. Some rooms at the Marina Bay Sands have whole-circuit views. The Mandarin Oriental is in Zone 3 of the circuit. You can see Turns 19 and 20 from Marina Bay view rooms at the Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore.
  • If you want to avoid the high cost of trackside accommodations, there are other more affordable lodging choices at mid-range hotels. Look at hotels in the city center close to an MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system or bus station for quick access to the circuit. Your budget hotels are very basic. Rooms are tiny, possibly being windowless. Room-only rates range from $389 SGD per night to $2300 SGD per night or higher, depending on the room category. Event rates require full payment in advance, are non-refundable, and no changes are allowed. We encourage you to visit the hotel’s website and read reviews on reliable sites to choose the hotel best suited for your requirements.
