***Effective April 4, 2022, Nigeria’s Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 released new protocols for all travellers to Nigeria, particularly:

  • All passengers travelling to Nigeria from any country MUST register via the online Nigeria International Travel Portal (nitp.ncdc.gov.ng).
  • Fully vaccinated passengers arriving in Nigeria are not required to test for COVID-19 before departure or after arrival.
  • Fully vaccinated passengers must show a verifiable full vaccination certificate.  Per the NCDC, full vaccination for COVID-19 refers to a person who received two (2) doses of an NCDC-approved COVID-19 vaccine at least two (2) weeks before their date of travel.  The list of approved vaccines is available on their website.  Those without a vaccination certificate will be treated as unvaccinated/partially vaccinated under this protocol.  Yellow World Health Organization and U.S. CDC vaccination cards are acceptable.
  • Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated passengers are required to take a COVID-19 PCR test 48hrs before departure and on day 2 and 7 post-arrival. These passengers must pay for their PCR tests through the Nigeria International Travel Portal (nitp.ncdc.gov.ng) prior to departure.
  • Children under 18 years follow the same rules as those who are fully vaccinated.
  • Passengers who do not follow the protocols for COVID-19 will face penalties.
  • Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry?  Yes
  • Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated passengers are required to take a COVID-19 PCR test 48hrs before departure and conduct days 2 and 7 post-arrival PCR tests. These passengers must pay for their PCR tests through the NITP before departure.
  • Fully vaccinated passengers arriving in Nigeria will not be required to carry out a pre-boarding COVID-19 PCR test nor carry out a Post-arrival PCR test or Rapid Antigen Test upon arrival in Nigeria.  Per the NCDC, full vaccination for COVID-19 refers to a person who received two (2) doses of an NCDC-approved COVID-19 vaccine at least two (2) weeks before their date of travel.  The list of approved vaccines is available on their website.
  • Fully vaccinated passengers must show a verifiable full vaccination certificate otherwise, they will be treated as unvaccinated/partially vaccinated under this protocol. Yellow World Health Organization and U.S. CDC vaccination cards are acceptable.
  • Children below the age of 18 years will be accorded the same privileges as persons who are fully vaccinated.
  • Passengers who do not adhere to the travel protocol will face the penalty as stipulated by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19.

RESTRICTIONS FOR TECHNICAL REFUELING/CREW REST

  • Tech stops Allowed.
  • Crew rest Allowed if the crew have their COVID-19 test certificate.

QUARANTINE REQUIREMENTS

  • Beginning October 25, the Government of Nigeria no longer requires self-isolation for fully vaccinated persons arriving in Nigeria.  However, testing requirements are in place for those not fully vaccinated. Please see the Press Statement on the Release of Revised International Travel Protocols into Nigeria  for full details and note that different rules apply for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travelers, as well as business travelers staying less than 7 days.
  • Nigeria CDC’s COVID-19 Patient Handbook states that individuals who test positive for COVID-19 with symptoms should self-isolate for 10 days after symptom onset, plus at least 3 days without symptoms.  Positive COVID-19 individuals who are asymptomatic may discontinue self-isolation 14 days after the initial positive result.

DATE THE RESTRICTION IS CURRENTLY EXPECTED TO END OR BE RE-EVALUATED

7 July 2022

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • According to the NCDC website, all citizens are allowed entry into Nigeria, but must follow the travel protocols at:  https://covid19.ncdc.gov.ng/guideline
  • Special protocols for travelers from UK and SA are also available in PDF form at:  https://covid19.ncdc.gov.ng/guideline
  • The Nigerian government does not require a negative COVID-19 test to exit Nigeria.  However, the Abuja International Airport has recently required passengers to present a negative COVID PCR test result during check-in for travel.
  • Many airlines and countries have their own COVID-19 test requirements.  Please check the requirements of both your airline and destination country before departing Nigeria.  If returning to the United States, check with the State you are traveling to, as each State has its own requirements.
  • As rules from airlines and countries change frequently, consider receiving a PCR test within 72 hours of departure from Nigeria.  This may help avoid being denied entry to the airport.  Some airports, such as Frankfurt, require a negative PCR test within 48 hours of travel.  Please check country specific information for transit points.
