The Big Game 2020

The FAA stakeholders and law enforcement partners have been planning and training for the Big Game in South Florida for months. The team has developed a comprehensive plan to ensure safety and minimize air traffic delays associated with the increase in game-related general aviation flights at local airports.

Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) will be in place to limit nonessential flights over the area. The TFRs will affect aircraft and drone flights. General Aviation pilots who want to fly around Miami or Fort Lauderdale between Jan. 27 and Feb. 4, 2020, will want to check out FAA's Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for air traffic procedures for the area.

The Big Game is Sunday, Feb. 2, at Hard Rock Stadium. The game time will be at approximately 6 p.m. EST.

The FAA has published a webpage with information for South Florida-area airspace and airports. The FAA has also released a Flight Advisory (PDF) which will be updated as additional information becomes available. As a designated National Security Special Event, additional unmanned aircraft restrictions will be in place before, during and after the Big Game. Learn more here: the Big Game 2020 is a No Drone Zone. The FAA details the timing and location of No Drone Zone Temporary Flight Restrictions in these English-language (PDF) and Spanish-language (PDF) fliers.

Reservation Program

A reservation program to facilitate ground services at the following participating South Florida metropolitan airports will be in effect from January 29 through February 4. Pilots should contact the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) at their destination to obtain reservations and additional information.

  • Airspace Flow Programs (AFP)
  • Time Based Metering
  • Miles in Trail
  • Airborne Holding
  • Ground Stops
  • Reroutes
  • Altitude Restriction
  • Gate Hold Procedures

Arrival & Departure

Arrival and Departure Route Requirements:
Jan. 27 0700L (1100 UTC) through Feb. 3 0600L (1000 UTC)

The NOTAM includes specific arrival and departure route requirements for jet and turboprop aircraft.

Special Event TFR

The FAA will publish a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for Super Bowl LIV centered on Hard Rock Stadium. At this time, we expect the TFR will be active from 4 p.m. EST (2100z) until 11:59 p.m. EST (0459z) on Sunday, February 2.

The TFR will have a 10-nautical-mile inner core and a 30-nautical-mile outer ring. The TFR will not affect regularly scheduled commercial flights flying in and out of Miami International Airport (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Emergency medical, public safety and military aircraft may enter the TFR in coordination with air traffic control.

The FAA will post the full text and graphic depiction of the Super Bowl LIV TFR in January.

Special security provisions are in effect for this event including (but not limited to) Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR), two-way communication and discrete transponder requirements. Specific procedures contained in this NOTAM may be revised or unavailable at the time of the event and access to some airports may be restricted. Pilots are encouraged to check NOTAMs frequently to verify they have the most current information.

Pilots should be prepared to provide documentation including personal identification, certificate number, aircraft ownership information, and a contact number.
TFR information is published by FDC NOTAM, normally 3 to 5 days prior to the event. TFR NOTAMs and graphics are available at the FAA TFR website: tfr.faa.gov

Traffic Managment

During periods of heavy demand, pilots should anticipate Traffic Management initiatives including but not limited to, reroute, miles-in-trail, altitude restriction, ground stop, and ground delay programs. When a Ground Delay Program (GDP) is in effect, aircraft must depart within 5 minutes of their assigned Expect Departure Clearance Time (EDCT). If unable, pilots must advise ATC and request a new EDCT assignment.

Traffic management initiatives are designed to provide equitable access to airports and airspace. To maintain program integrity and minimize delays, airborne changes of destination to area airports will not be accepted, except in emergencies.

Gate-Hold procedures may be implemented during heavy arrival/departure traffic periods. The ATIS will specify whether all (VFR and IFR) or only IFR aircraft are subject to ground delay at the ramp. Affected departures will be informed which frequency to contact for engine start/taxi clearance time.
EXAMPLE: "GATE HOLD PROCEDURES ARE IN EFFECT. ALL AIRCRAFT (or ALL IFR AIRCRAFT) CONTACT (ATC Position) ON (frequency) FOR ENGINE START TIME."

NOTE: Due to the high number of itinerant departures, aircraft may be held on the ramp to facilitate sequencing, expedite departures, and comply with traffic management restrictions.

Flight Plans, Air Files & Training Flights

FLIGHT PLANS
File flight plans at least 6 hours, but not more than 22 hours, prior to proposed time of departure. This is required to ensure Traffic Management Initiatives reflect authentic demand. Should TMI be necessary, filing early may minimize your assigned delay. Duplicate flight plans (same time/call sign) to the same airport or multiple airport destinations are subject to removal from the system and may result in increased delays.

AIR FILES / IFR PICK-UPS
Due to anticipated frequency congestion from the large volume of arrivals and departures to and from the Miami and Fort Lauderdale terminal areas, Miami ARTCC and TRACON will not be able to accept Air files nor provide IFR pick-ups from airborne flights to/from airports listed under the "Special Air Traffic Procedures" section, except in emergencies. Pilots should call the appropriate frequency, phone number or Flight Service Station (FSS) to request an IFR departure clearance prior to departure.

TRAINING FLIGHTS
South Florida airspace will be highly saturated with traffic; therefore, training flights and student solo cross-country flights are highly discouraged in the South Florida metro area (within 60NM of MIA). Practice approaches, touch-and-go landings, and other training operations may be limited or suspended.

Airport Parking Reservations

A reservation program to facilitate ground services will be in effect at participating South Florida airports. Reservations are administered by local Fixed Base Operators (FBO). Contact the FBO at your destination for reservations and additional information.

All pilots/operators are STRONGLY encouraged to contact the FBO prior to departure to ensure availability for both overnight parking and passenger pickup/drop-off.

Airport Status Information

Real time flight delay, airport status, and program information is available at www.fly.faa.gov/ois.

VFR Arrivals & Potential Holding

VFR arrivals may expect lengthy delays and potential holding during peak traffic periods. VFR advisory service within the Miami TRACON / Miami Center will be on a workload-permitting basis.
