APAC Tightens Restrictions - January 18, 2022

With the sharp rise in Omicron cases throughout the Asia/Pacific region and globally, many countries across the region have scaled back the recent easing of restrictions for international travel. As Omicron continues to spread at an unprecedented rate, the increase in restrictions is expected to continue in the near term. As such, the APAC region continues to be the most restricted across the globe regarding the difficulty of international travel. We can provide you with any known updates and a full written country briefing like this one linked here.

European Union Council Recommends Removing the United States from the Safe List - September 1, 2021

Effective August 30, 2021, the EU council has recommended to EU countries that the US should be removed from the “Safe List.” If adopted by EU member countries, this would restrict US travelers with requirements such as COVID testing, quarantine on arrival, or a stop to all non-essential travel.

EU member countries are given the option to decide to adopt the recommendation, stay with their current protocols, or tighten up current protocols. Requirements will be different for vaccinated and non-vaccinated travelers.

Nationals of Israel, Kosovo, Lebanon, Montenegro, and North Macedonia are also recommended to be removed from the safe list and subject to the same changes.

Countries on the Safe List

The EU is now recommending the EU Members States to lift the temporary restrictions on non-essential travel for the following countries:

•    Albania
•    Armenia
•    Australia
•    Azerbaijan
•    Bosnia & Herzegovina
•    Brunei Darussalam
•    Canada

•    China (subject to confirmation of reciprocity)
•    Japan
•    Jordan
•    New Zealand
•    Qatar
•    Moldova
•    Saudi Arabia

•    Serbia
•    Singapore
•    South Korea
•    Ukraine
•    Administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao

Being added to the “Safe List” allows them fewer restrictions and protocols than those not on the list.

Regional Update: Asia-Pacific - August 18, 2021

The Asia-Pacific region has remained tightly restricted due to the surge in the Delta variant. These restrictions can include outright bans of citizens who live in or have visited a restricted country and mandated 14-to-21-day quarantines for those allowed to travel. And although vaccine rollouts are happening rapidly in places such as Singapore, there is still uncertainty as to when restrictions will ease.

European Union Lifts Restrictions on Non-Essential Travel for 14 Countries - June 18, 2021

European Union has updated the ‘Safe country list’ today following the agreement obtained earlier this week. EU is now recommending the Member States to lift the temporary restrictions on non-essential travel for the following 14 countries:

  • Albania
  • Australia
  • Israel
  • Japan
  • Lebanon
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of North Macedonia
  • Rwanda
  • Serbia
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • Thailand
  • United States of America
  • China, subject to confirmation of reciprocity

Based on the recommendation, the different EU countries will be deciding individually on the measures taken and whether the restrictions will be lifted for all or just for some countries.

France has already moved forward by placing the US into the ‘Green’ category meaning that the US travelers are no longer restricted in their travel reasons.

Travelers are required to present a vaccination certificate or proof of a negative PCR test not older than 72 hours. No quarantine applies. More countries are expected to follow the recommendation.

We will continue to monitor this situation and publish any new information as it becomes available.
