Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Since 2015, World Fuel has delivered more than 45 million gallons of SAF to business and commercial aviation customers worldwide. We are committed to increasing the aviation industry’s access to low-carbon fuel and creating greater efficiencies in SAF distribution.

What is SAF?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is jet fuel made from renewable resources such as fats, oils, greases, and biomass. SAF production and blending specifications can be found in ASTM 7566. To be used in an airplane, neat-SAF (ASTM 7566) must be blended up to a maximum of 50% with fossil-based conventional jet fuel, and it may then be recertified as jet fuel under ASTM D1655. So when SAF is blended with fossil-based jet fuel up to a maximum of 50%, it meets all the requirements of conventional jet fuel.

Neat-SAF versus SAF

Neat-SAF refers to 100% sustainable aviation fuel. Neat-SAF is not an approved transportation fuel. “SAF” typically refers to the blended gallon, which contains both renewable and conventional jet portions.

SAF Book and Claim Solution (SAFc)

SAF is in high demand, but production has not yet scaled to meet all of Aviation’s needs. Renewable fuels, such as SAF, can keep emissions even lower by being used as close to the source of production as possible, which may not necessarily be where a consumer wanting SAF operates. Our SAFc allows a consumer to access the environmental claims and benefits of SAF without consuming the physical product.

SAFc enables a customer to purchase (and World Fuel to deliver the physical SAF) into the supply chain at one airport and claim the carbon reductions associated with it at another airport. This option allows customers to derive the same environmental benefits of SAF without putting the physical product in their airplane or creating additional carbon emissions when transporting SAF over long distances.

World Fuel is Certified

We are certified by both RSB and ISCC certification bodies. Learn more.

ISCC is an independent, globally recognized sustainability certification scheme that verifies whether products like renewable fuels meet certain standards and eligibility requirements, such as the European Commission’s sustainability criteria for biofuels and bioliquids, as well as the requirements for CORSIA eligible fuels set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Through the ISCC certification process, we can ensure that the renewable fuels we distribute meet specific sustainability requirements and provide customers with the documentation necessary to demonstrate compliance.

RSB has also established a sustainability framework against which it offers certification verifying the integrity of low-carbon products, materials, and fuels. We are also RSB CORSIA certified and have received RSB Global and RSB Book & Claim certifications at our locations offering SAF throughout the globe.

As a trader of ISCC and RSB-certified fuels, we are one of the few logistics providers who can ensure the fuel is certified from the time it is picked up at the producer's gate until it is delivered to the wing.

We're an Authorized SAF Distributor

Distributor for Various SAF Suppliers

We actively partner with the following SAF suppliers in the United States and Europe to expand the availability of SAF to our customers.

We help producers of SAF by aggregating demand and facilitating the distribution down to the wingtip within our existing distribution and marketing platform. Further, as a certified party under both RSB and ISCC schemes, we can ensure the integrity and traceability of SAF across the value chain.
