Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Since 2015, World Fuel has delivered more than 45 million gallons of SAF to business and commercial aviation customers worldwide. We are committed to increasing the aviation industry’s access to low-carbon fuel and creating greater efficiencies in SAF distribution.
What is SAF?
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is jet fuel made from renewable resources such as fats, oils, greases, and biomass. SAF production and blending specifications can be found in ASTM 7566. To be used in an airplane, neat-SAF (ASTM 7566) must be blended up to a maximum of 50% with fossil-based conventional jet fuel, and it may then be recertified as jet fuel under ASTM D1655. So when SAF is blended with fossil-based jet fuel up to a maximum of 50%, it meets all the requirements of conventional jet fuel.
Neat-SAF versus SAF
Neat-SAF refers to 100% sustainable aviation fuel. Neat-SAF is not an approved transportation fuel. “SAF” typically refers to the blended gallon, which contains both renewable and conventional jet portions.
